The winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize has shown that the answer lies in micro financing--making loans to the poor so they can begin or improve a small business and lift themselves up from poverty.
KIVA ("Unity" in Swahili) is an organization that facilitates these loans by making it possible to choose the borrower of the loan--loans are as low as $25. When the total amount requested is received it is forwarded to the borrower. When the loan is paid back it can be loaned over again or cashed out. Pay back is about 98%.
